Overview
Hospital hygiene refers to the practices and procedures used to maintain a clean and safe environment, preventing the spread of infections within healthcare facilities. It's crucial for patient safety, staff well-being, and overall quality of care. Effective hygiene practices include hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and proper waste management.
- All medical facilities must have trained hygiene personnel and a hygiene plan in place that lists all hygiene control measures implemented. In addition to hand hygiene, protective clothing and disinfection play an important role.
- Hygiene standards must be observed by doctors, nursing and surgical staff, patients and visitors.
Scope of Medical Care
Hospital hygiene is responsible for:
- Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC): Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is a practical, evidence-based approach to prevent avoidable infections in health care settings, including those caused by anti-microbial resistant germs. The precautions apply to all areas and all people present in the medical facility. These include doctors, nursing and surgical staff, patients and visitors, all of whom must observe the measures set out in the hygiene plan.
