Congenital Malformation & Growth Disorders

Congenital malformations can be genetic or through external influences (e.g. thalidomide / Contergan ™,….). They can range from minimal, barely noticeable changes to the absence of entire limb parts. Inborn malformations can lead to physical (impairment of hand function) and psychological impairments

Growth disorders in children refers to a situation where a child's growth (height and/or weight) falls below the expected range for their age and sex, or where their growth slows significantly. This can be a sign of an underlying health condition, genetic predisposition, or environmental factors affecting growth

A multidisciplinary approach has proven itself for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital hand malformations.
Close cooperation with the children`s Hospital is mandatory.

Bone Metabolism & Osteoporosis

Bone metabolism (Bone remodeling) , is a lifelong process where old bone tissue is broken down (bone resorption) and replaced with new bone tissue (bone absortion).

This process is essential for:

It involves both bone formation (osteogenesis) and bone resorption (osteolysis), regulated by hormones, nutrients, and other factors (activity,....)

This clinic is run concurrently by a specialist osteoporosis physician and specialist care nurses. It aims to provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive care for patients with osteopenia, osteoporosis and other disorders of bone metabolism.
It is supported by allied health services including dietitians with a special interest in osteoporosis, and osteoporosis exercise classes run by experienced physiotherapists. This clinic operates from the LIFE Centre.

Procedures

Osteoporosis Screening

Screening can help identify osteoporosis before a fracture occurs
Osteoporosis screening typically involves a bone mineral density (BMD) test, to measure bone density at key sites like the hip and spine. DXA is a safe, painless, and noninvasive procedure. Osteoporosis screening is indicated for

Calcium and Phosphate Hemostasis Screening

Calcium and phosphate homeostasis refers to the body's tightly regulated balance of these two essential minerals. This balance is crucial for various physiological processes, including bone health, nerve function, and muscle contractions.
The body maintains this equilibrium through a complex interplay of hormones, organs, and mechanisms.

Neuro-muscular Disorders

Nerve cells (neurons) send and receive electrical messages to and from the body to help control voluntary muscles. Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles and the nerves that communicate sensory information back to the brain.
When the neurons become unhealthy or die, communication between the nervous system and muscles breaks down. As a result, muscles weaken and waste away (atrophy)

Neuromuscular disorders can be inherited or caused by a spontaneous gene mutation; some also may be caused by immune system disorders. The most common diseases are:

Currently there is no cure for neuromuscular disorders. Treating symptoms, delaying disease progression and enhancing quality of life for patients is accomplished with medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy and, when necessary, surgery

A multidisciplinary, multiprofessional approach has proven itself for the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders: Close cooperation between Nursing (Prevention), Neurology, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Orthopedics and Neurosurgery is mandatory

Peripheral Nerves & Brachial Plexus

Peripheral nerves can be compared to highly sophisticated cables, that relay information between your brain and the rest of your body.

Peripheral nerves can be damaged in several ways:

Peripheral nerves may have motor (movement), sensory (touch) and autonimic functions, which may be impaired to different degrees.

A multidisciplinary, multiprofessional approach has proven itself for the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerve disorders: Close cooperation between Neurology, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Hand Surgery, and Anesthesia & Pain Clinic is mandatory

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (chronic Nerve compression)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which is the entrapment syndrome of the median nerve at the wrist level – is the most common chronic compression syndrome in humans. Nearly 50% of all humans will experience more or less carpal tunnel syndrome during aging.

Acute Nerve Injury

Acute nerve injuries must be treated as soon as possible. Intensive Physiotherapy is necessary in all cases. Nerve regeneration needs up to 1 year

Old nerve lesion
(long standing nerve palsy)

Complete nerve lesions lead to irreversible changes at the muscles (motor function) after 12 to 18 months and nerve receptors (sensory function) after 24 – 36 months. Beyond this timeframe, there is no useful function results to be expected from nerve repair/reconstruction. For these cases secondary reconstructive methods are used.

Painful, swollen joints (Arthritis)

Rheumatism is a broad term often used to describe joint pain. Rheumatism is not a specific type of condition but rather a general descriptor.

Arthritis is often used to refer to any disorder that leads to a painful and swollen Joint.

Looking at the multitude of different reasons for joint pain and the corresponding multitude of possible therapies, it quickly becomes clear that a single discipline alone cannot offer the entire spectrum of modern and comprehensive management of painful joints. Close cooperation between Orthopedics/Hands surgery, Rheumatology, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation , and Anesthesia & Pain Clinic is mandatory. Radiotherapy is an excellent option especially for small joints (hand and foot)

Procedures

Early motion (Physiotherapy)

Physiotherapy is the basis of ant arthritis treatment Early motion therapy involves initiating movement and activity soon after onset of inflammation, injury or surgery, rather than relying solely on immobilization, to promote healing and restore function. This approach helps prevent stiffness, adhesions, and muscle atrophy while promoting proper tissue healing and reducing the risk of complication

Intraarticular Injection

Intra-articular injections, or joint injections, are a common treatment for arthritis that involve injecting medication directly into the affected joint. This targeted approach can help reduce inflammation, pain, and improve joint function All intraarticular injections must be done under sterile conditions.

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT)

Low-dose Radiotherapy (LDRT) is a therapeutic tool to treat all inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the joints and soft tissues. LDRT's anti-inflammatory effects involve modulating immune responses, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inducing apoptosis in inflammatory cells.LDRT has only a localized effect without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues. The treatment is very well tolerated and pain-free for all patients.

Total Joint Replacement (joint prosthesis)

Total joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace damaged or diseased joints with artificial implants. It's commonly used for arthritis, especially in the hip and knee, where it can significantly improve pain, function, and quality of life The damaged joint surfaces are removed, and a prosthesis (artificial joint) made of metal, plastic, or ceramic is implanted. Post-operative physical therapy is crucial for regaining strength, range of motion, and function.

Aging Body

Aging is one of the most important issues in our society, and affects everyone without exception. Speaking of aging, most people think about physical aging, however, aging also affect Mind and Soul

As you get older, the Body shows:

This causes the soft tissue envelop to become larger than the content. Wrinkles and sagging skin sacks appear.

The aging process affects all parts of the body.

Procedures

Regular Exercise (Physiotherapy)

Exercise is a promising lifestyle intervention that has shown antiaging effects by extending lifespan and healthspan through decreasing the hallmarks of aging and age-associated inflammation.

Pain

Pain is a (warning) signal in your nervous system that something may be wrong.
Each person feels pain differently, even if the reason for the pain is the same. Mental status plays a important role, too.
There are different reasons for pain, and there are different types of pain. Doctors will treat different types of pain in different ways. A treatment that is effective against one type of pain may not relieve another.

A multidisciplinary approach has proven itself for the diagnosis and treatment of pain. Close cooperation with Anesthesia and Pain clinic, Mental Wellness & Brain Health center and Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Center is ,mandatory

Acute Pain Treatment

Pain is one of the biggest concerns patients have who are considering undergoing surgical procedures, and the biggest hinder to adequate postoperative rehabilitation

Pain management relies on multiple techniques and treatments to discover and manage the root cause of a patient’s pain. It aims to provide relief and improve the quality of life for patients with acute and chronic pain conditions. This goal can be achieved by the use of pain medicine (pharmacological methods) and non-pharmacological methods.

Diabetic Foot Syndrome

Tumor

The term "Tumor" comes from the Latin and refers to an increase in the volume of a tissue (“swelling”) - regardless of how it came about and whether it is benign (good) or malignant (bad).

Tumors can develop in all tissues and all parts of the body.

Both benign and malignant tumors can cause complications at the site of the tumor (local complications). Advanced malignant tumors can also affect the entire body (systemic complications) through settlements (metastases) in lymph nodes and organs

Tumors of any kind need a full hand work-up. In the rare event of a malignant tumor a multidisciplinary, multiprofessional approach has proven itself for the diagnosis and treatment. Cooperation with a Multidisciplinary Tumor Board is mandatory

Trauma

Trauma care is the specialized medical treatment provided to individuals who have suffered severe injuries from accidents, violence, or other traumatic events.

Trauma is a key competence of orthopedic surgery. However if more than the bones are involved, closed cooperation with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is beneficial for the patient.
